Consumed by a prophecy that he will one day be king, the Scottish general Macbeth, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, conspire to murder King Duncan. After successfully taking the throne, Macbeth becomes paranoid and commits more murders to secure his power, including having his friend Banquo and the family of his rival Macduff killed. Wracked with guilt and madness, Lady Macbeth eventually dies by suicide. Meanwhile, Macduff and Duncan's son Malcolm lead an army against the tyrannical Macbeth, who, believing he is invincible due to the witches' prophecies, fights on. In the final battle, Macduff reveals that he was not "of woman born" but "untimely ripped" from his mother's womb, a loophole that fulfills the prophecy. Macduff then kills and beheads Macbeth, and Malcolm is crowned the new king of Scotland, restoring peace.
